Hello Pam,
I emailed you last year but can't remember if you answered me. Are you a member of Potters Grove? I have been researching Elijah Potter and thought he was Johnathan's son. But now I believe he was James and Barbay's son. My husband's uncle was told of 5 brothers who lost touch during the Civil War. He told me two had gone north and two toTexas. Do you know where James and Barbay went? Do you know where they are buried? Another Pam Potter has information from a bible that has an Elijah born in 1787, Solomon, Andrew, Joel Lee and Johnathan. We believe they were brothers or possibly cousins. I have seen pictures and met Potters in Jackson County and there is a strong resemblance to my husband's family. I found a picture in a book on Mountain People of a family reunion and there is a man in it who is also in a family picture on the Grove. The picture in the book was taken in the Missouri Ozarks. According to the land records of Jackson County, Alabama, the Potters started buying land in the early 1830s. James bought the same land as Joel. Solomon and Joseph also bought land at the same time. Then later, after Johnathan was of age, his name appears. Joel and Solomon moved on to Missouri. Elijah died before 1860. According to the 1850 cencus he was not the right age to have been born in 1787. I have no idea what happened to Andrew, but there was an Andrew Potter in Carter Co, Tenn. I spoke to a man last week who lives in Carter Co and he said John Pott's children had moved to Alabama. That is pretty broad, but it coould be the same ones. Could that mean Stephen Potter's father was their father or a brother? Where did he come from? Johnathan's family lore has his father as Elijah. Jay Gentry, who decends from Joel said he has always heard his father was Elijah. And there were two Solomons. One had 3 daughters. He fits the one in Jackson Co. I have found Solomon and Ester Melton with 3 girls. I don't know if this is correct. So James was related to Joel and the others. I believe he was Johnathan's brother. I have seen where Johnathan has come from all over Tennessee. But I believe they must have benn around Scott Co. Va. Carter Co, Johnson Co. But there is the brick wall. No one can find anything before them.
I have seen your genealogy onJessie on the FTM. My Elijah went to Texas when he was 12. I don't know who he was with, his older brother or his father. He settled in Henderson Coutny and marriedMary Famie. They had 4 children who lived. Their son Benjamin Dallas Potter married Martha Lou Kizer. She was the daughter od William Kizer and Mary Elizabeth Stegall. Mary Stegall was the daughter of Hensley Stegall and Mary Palmer. Benjamin and Martha were the parents of 11 children. One of which was Joel Elijah. He was my husband's father. Elijah's first child was James W. He was probably named after Elijah's father James. His second son was John.
Do you have anything on Jessie's brother William? Do you know who he married? I found a Minurva Jane Foster who married William Cargo Potter in Jackson CO.and after he died she married William R. Shelton, in Texas. Could he have been Jessie's brother? Do you know who his sisters married? Elijah Bynum signed on Elijah's widow's pension application. Is there anyone else out there connected to this family?
