England 1685 Gulielmi/William Poston who married a Martha Browne Jun 15, 1685 in Brimfield, Hereford, England. They had a daughter Joanna or Joan Poston who married John Baylis. William Poston who married Martha Brown being my wife's 7x great grandfather through his son William and wife Winifred.

England 1686 William Poston 28 June 1686

Then his son Francis Poston was born 1715,died 4/1777 and married 1735 but I don't have his wifes name. Francis Poston had a son Elijah Poston who was born 1749,died 1811 and married 1769 to Susanna Barker, their daughter Nancy Poston married Enos Smith

England 1687 Thomas Poston 18 December 1687

England 1690 Henry Poston 1 May 1690

England 1691 Johannes Poston 23 August 1691

England 1694 Joanna Poston 22 May 1694 who married John Bayliss 4 August 1720. Joanna died on 6 November 1767.

England to America 1703 no one can say exactly when John Poston from England was married. In the book "Elias B. Poston and His Ancestors," E. O. and G. L. James wrote that he probably married no later than 1712. They also wrote, "We have searched in vain for the marriage record among Maryland documents." John Poston was 17 when he came to America in 1703, bound to Henry Brown. I believe your information probably came from the book I quoted, which was published in 1942. The Colin James book, "A Poston Family Genealogy John Hamill Poston, 1786-1848," was published in 1959. In it is stated correctly what is shown in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register that John Poston came, not from Northumberland, but from "off Shrewesberry," which is in Shropshire. I'm not sure of the relationship between E. O., G. L., and Colin James, but some of the Colin James statements are almost direct quotes from the earlier book. Maybe I mis-read G. L. and it should have been C. L., for Colin. Someone on this forum can probably answer that. I did not copy pages about Francis from the E. O. and G. L. James book, but I'm sure they follow that line on because of this statement on page 7: "To quicken your interest, Francis Poston , the third son named in the will, was our ancestor; he was the grandfather of Elias B. Poston." If you have not seen that book, I feel sure you could learn more from it.

Pa. 1705 ? JOHN2 POSTON II, b. Bet. 1705 - 1736, Penn.; d. Bet. 1762 - 1820, Penn..JOHN2 POSTON II (JOHN1) was born Bet. 1705 - 1736 in Penn., and died Bet. 1762 - 1820 in Penn.. He married MARGARET BALDRIDGE Bet. 1734 - 1761, daughter of WILLIAM BALDRIDGE and JANETTE HOLMES. She was born 1719 in Belfast, Ireland, and died 1766 in Little Britain, Penn

NOTE: I have several Poston families living in Shropshire from the 1600's (just in passing Shropshire was also sometimes referred to as Salop) anyway I digress. I will list the towns I have together with the Christian names of the males below and you will notice that certain areas and families tend to stick to their own line of Christian names thus:-
Church Stretton line: Samuel, John, Richard, Edward, Robert, William and I have one only Elisha.
Wrockwardine and Winstanstowe line: Edward, William, Thomas, John, Samuel, George, Charles, Robert, Richard and I have only one Randolf.
There is also a line in Herefordshire at Middleton on the Hill: Guiliemi (William), Johannes (John), Thomas, Richard, Samuel, Henricus (Henry), Thomas and Charles.
I also have Postons in Staffordshire (before boundary changes which put the following towns in the now West Midlands).
Tipton: Thomas, Richard, John, Joseph.
Walsall: Edward
Dudley: Samuel
Kidderminster: Thomas, Samuel and Caroline.
Going back to the two Johns I have an entry which states that Johannes Poston married Maria 11 October 1676 at Middleton on the Hill (maybe John and Mary you know?)Could one of the original Johns be their son born 1686 who emigrated to America, went on to have another John who married Pricilla and had Samuel etc.etc.

1715 Francis Poston was born 1715, died 4/1777 and married ? 1735

MD 1730 Leonard Poston (~1730, MD - 1803, Loudoun Co) m. Ann "Nancy" [maiden name unknown]. Loudoun Co., VA Postons The following represents the descendants Leonard Poston:
1-Leonard Poston (~1730, MD - 1803, Loudoun Co) m. Ann "Nancy" [maiden name unknown]

His parentage is proven by his baptismal record and Loudoun Co. DB 3Q, Pgs. 102-104 which explicitly state his father's name as Wilsey Poston.
3-Elizabeth Ann Poston (3/23/1801, Loudoun) also baptized at St. James. Elizabeth is likely to have married James Downer.
2-Elizabeth Poston (~1768) married Washington Johnson on 4/18/1805 in Frederick Co., MD. Her parentage is proven by the land she inherited in her father's will and Loudoun DB V, Pg. 201 which mentions father Leonard.

Only the following children are known to have been born to Leonard R. Poston and Mary E. (Coale) Poston:

Pa. 1737 ROBERT POSTON, b. Bet. 1737 - 1760, Pa; d. Unknown, Pa.

England? 1737 William Poston (1737 Church Stretton), son of Richard Poston & Mary Baker, and he thinks that it is my William Poston. My William & Mary were married on 25th Jan 1768, which means William of Church Stretton would have been 32, which could still be him, especially if it was a second marriage. The evidence is strong however, as my William had a son called Elisha, and William 1737

SC ? 1740 Samuel POSTON b abt 1740. Samuel Poston whom is enumerated in the 1840 Chesterfield County, South Carolina Federal Census, Image#: 340/Roll: M704_510, page 360?
1 male age 90 to 100
1 female age 15 to 20
1 female age 40 to 50
This would put this Samuel's birth year between 1740 and 1750. I do not see this Samuel anywhere else in the census. Maybe I just passed him over, or maybe he really didn't know his age :) :) My Line

? England 1749 Elijah Poston who was born 1749,died 1811 and married 1769 to Susanna Barker, their daughter Nancy Poston married Enos Smith

SC Leonard (Francis Leonard) was married to Cecelia Poston (I don't have her father's name handy, but she is of the Andrew Poston Line). They may have had twelve children but I only have nine of them: Samuel, Ferdinand, Christopher, Jolly, John, William, Ellen, Francis and Thomas they are in the Erma Poston Landers book. Chapter six ~ The Thomas Poston Family. Most of them stayed in South Carolina in, around and about the same area of Marion County, (now Florence County).

1755 JOHN POSTON III, b. 1755; d. 1830.

1758 Hatch Dent, son of Hatch and Anne Dent, was born May 20, 1751. He married on Dec. 17, 1778, Judith, born Jan. 10, 1758, the daughter of William and Priscilla Poston, of Charles Co. SC Postons in Marion Co. SC or what is now known as Darlington Co. I Alice Poston she had three children: Priest listed as white
James listed as mulatto, Elmira unknown ??

SC 1775 Sarah Poston London's ancestry is well documented. Her maternal line traces back to Robert and Sarah (maiden name unknown) Patterson of York Co., SC. It is unknown whether or not Robert was the immigrant. His will, written in 1775 and recorded in York Co. in 1791, mentions land which he owned in "the Province of Virginia," but it is not known if he lived in another state before that. One child named in the will is Robert, who was born circa 1775, moved to Rutherford Co., NC, and thence to McMinn Co., TN, where he died. His will was probated on 7 Jan 1828 in McMinn Co. Robert's wife was Mabel, surname unknown. Robert and Mabel's daughter, Mabel, was born in NC, probably Rutherford Co., on 11 Dec 1796. She married John Poston, born 31 Dec 1797, and they remained in the part of Rutherford Co. that became Cleveland Co. John and Mabel Patterson Poston were the parents of Sarah Poston London. John died 20 Oct 1862, and Mabel died 14 Jan 1884. They are buried with some of their children and grandchildren in the Poston Cemetery on Highway 226 in Cleveland Co. Elizabeth Patterson, sister of Mabel Patterson and therefore aunt of Sarah Poston London, married Isom Julian in Rutherford Co., NC. They eventually settled in Bradley Co. The earliest known ancestor of Sarah Poston London through her father, John Poston, is the immigrant, John Poston, who came to America in 1703 from Shropshire Co., England. At that time John was 17 years old and was bound to a Henry Brown. John settled in Maryland and reared a large family. According to Colin James, author of A Poston Family Genealogy, published in 1959, John, Poston Jr., son of the immigrant, moved to NC. His wife's name was Priscilla, and they had 4 sons, one of whom was named Samuel. However, after Colin James' book was published, a page from a very old Poston Bible was found, which lists Samuel's parents as Jonathan and Mary Poston. This information requires a revision in the lineage given in James' book. One logical conclusion is that there was another generation in the line, and that Jonathan was the son of John, Jr., and Priscilla. Clearly, the abundance of men named John in the Poston family makes it very difficult to separate the generations and prove the relationships. We may assume that Jonathan and Mary Poston lived in NC in the 1760s, because a deed dated 1769 shows that they sold 101 acres of land in Rowan Co., NC. This is the same land which Jonathan (no wife's name given) bought in 1762. According to the page from the Bible, Samuel was born 8 Oct 1765. He married Rachel King, and they had seven children, including John Poston, father of Sarah Poston London. Samuel's will was probated in 1819 and Rachel's in 1853.

NC 1781 Rebeccah Poston was married to James Johnston on June 19, 1781 in Caswell Co., NC. The bondsman or witness was Jere Poston

NC and SC Vance Poston and his wife was Angelina ? of Cleveland County, NC. I think that their son Samuel Poston moved to SC and married Elnora Lindsey of Union County. They had 9 or 10 children. There daughter Ella Poston born July 25, 1985 married Haskell Free. They had 8 children and moved from Union to Asheville, SC. I am looking for any links or information on Samuel and Elnora Poston. These two eventually moved to Knoxville, Tennessee during the 1920s. After the 1930s I lose them. Any information is greatly appreciated. Some of Sam and Elnora's children were Bunion Hosea, Leenora, Furman, Freeman, Harvey, John C. Ruby, Virginia and Jessie (Female).

NC 1797 Seeking information on the family of Charles Poston married Anna Starr February 13, 1797 in Surrey Co. Tenn 1875 On October, 28, 1875, Sarah T. Poston of the above Census records, married James Bartley Naill.
In 1880, in Knox County, Tennessee, they had a son that they named Charles Greenlief Naill.

Tenn and NY 1877 George M. Poston (b. abt 1877 in TN / d. aft 1930) married Anna E. (last name unknown, but parents from Germany) abt. 1907 in NY. In 1910, 1920 and 1930 census, the family is living in Buffalo, Erie Co., NY. Their children: Margaret A. (b. abt 1910), Ethel B. (b. abt 1912), James (b. abt 1915) and George Jr. (b. abt 1916). The boys are missing from the 1930 census ... I don't know if that means they died, moved to live with relatives or what?

SC to Va. 1881 Andrew Jackson Poston, born 1881 in Darlington SC area . Moved to Lynchburg Va. before 1910. He worked in the cotton mill there and maybe in Danville Va. I don't know anything about him in South Carolina except he was raised by two step-sisters and was born in Darlington SC. His full name was Andrew Jackson Poston and I was told he was called Jack. He was born 8/25/1881. Andrew J. Poston, died in 1946 in Virginia. A copy of his death certificate list "unknown" for the parents. It also stated, he was not a veteran. He worked in a cotton mill so I doubt he owned property. With no paper trail I think he will be a hard person to find, unless someone finds his name in connection with their family history.

SC 1912 McErvin Poston (died abt. 1912) and his son Andrew B. Poston (died May 27, 1920). I am trying to trace Hugh R. Poston, brother of Andrew B. Poston. I would like to exchange information about Postons of Georgetown County, SC.

Va. DALLAS POSTON is the dispenser of justice in his section of Shasta County, as well as a farmer on a large scale on what is known as the Lilly ranch, one of the best ranches in that part of the county. He is of good old Virginia and Kentucky stock, which came originally from Scotland. His grandfather, Henry Poston, was born in Kentucky, and was a soldier in the war of 1812; his father, William Harrison Poston, was born in Virginia, and was a soldier in the Mexican war; his son, the subject of this sketch, was born in Virginia January 9, 1844, and he also served his country in the great civil war. He enlisted in Company K, of the Missouri Volunteer Cavalry, when a youth of only seventeen, and was consequently too young to receive promotion; but he was promoted before the close of the war to the position of Second Sergeant. His mother, Louisa (Johnson) Poston, was a native of Virginia, and he was the second child of a family of nine children. After his service in the army he turned his attention to farming in Missouri for a time, and then emigrated to Kansas and purchased 160 acres of land, upon which he built and which he otherwise improved. In April, 1873, he came to Lake County, California, and worked in the quicksilver mines successfully four years. He then started and ran a meat-market six years, when he sold and removed to Middletown, in that county, and ran the Lake County Hotel for a year. Then, in 1887, he went to the Lilly ranch in Shasta County, where he now resides, and is sowing about 320 acres of land to wheat, barley and oats. Mr. Poston was married in 1864, to Miss Mary Jane Funk, a native of Missouri, and they have had nine children, seven of whom are living, namely: William H., Cory B., Winnie E., born in Missouri; Sarah and Chas. A., born in Kansas, and Ira, Emery, Evan and Omar, born in California. Mr. Postonís political views are Democratic. He has held the office of Supervisor in Lake County for several years and now holds the office of Justice of the Peace in Shasta County. He is a member of the A.O.U.W. and of the I.O.O.F., and has been District Deputy in both orders. Memorial & Biographical History of Northern California, The Lewis Publishing Co., 1891
