Vicki,
Have you found any more information about your Post family?
I am trying to find out more about David and Sarah's son John. I believe that John Post is my great great grandfather Charles J. Post.
I have copies of some papers a relative gave me. There is a marriage certificate for Charles J. Post of Beaver Dam, WI marrying Nelly Hart of East Troy, Bradford, PA on 10-10-1865 in Elmira, Chemung County, N.Y.
There is also a notarized paper stating that Sarah A. Post, widow of Charles J. Post and Nelly Hart are one and the same. Sarah applied for a pension as the widow of soldier Charles J. Post.Sarah said she lived apart from Charles for nearly a year before his death, she lived in New London, WI and he in Menominee, MI.
There is a declaration for invalid pension signed by Charles J. Post, age 38, on March 12, 1879. This document states that he lived in Bovina, Outagamie, WI. and before that in Brown County, WI. That Charles enrolled in the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry on 10-13-1861. He was taken prisoner at Andersonville, Georgia around the last day of July 1864 and was discharged in Rome, Georgia on 10-31-1864. He then re-enlisted for another year into a different company. Charles was of dark complexion, black hair, hazel eyes and was 5ft 4 in tall.
I also have a copy of his death certificate. Charles J. Post died on 4-12-1903 in Menomine, Michigan at age 63 years 3 months and 16 days. The certificate states that he was still married, he was born in PA and that his mother was Sarah Franklin of RI and his father was David Post of VT.
I looked up my great grandparents' marriage certificate at the Waupaca County, WI courthouse. Lessie M. Post married August (Miney) Barlow. Lessie's parents were listed as John Post born in PA and Sarah Hart born in PA. (daughter of Thomas Hart of VT and Hannah of MA).
Grandma Lessie's sister, Jessie Post's birth certificate says her parents were Charles J. Post and Sarah Hart.
Are John Post and Charles J. Post the same person?
The ages also match up.
I have found several bits of information online, census and Door County History, etc. with David and Sarah Post's other children, Henry, Lucretia, Lydia, Harriet, Matilda. And a Catherine Post that I believe is from that family.
Have you seen a reference called "History of Door County", printed in 1881? I stumbled across it online a couple of weeks ago.
It has on page 39, Town of Otumba, "1854 George H. Thorpe, keeps boarding house; came from Dodge county this state; born New York 1839; married Lucretia Post 1861; has one child".
On the same page is Henry F. Post. Throughout the passages I've looked at there are several of David and Sarah Post's children and grandchildren mentioned as well as others with the last name Thorpe.
I also found a newspaper clip online from May 1854, Beaver Dam, Dodge County, WI, "The Republican". The clipping stated " Died Monday morning last 15th inst of consumption, David Post, in the 54th year of his age.
If you or anyone else could help me figure this family out, please let me know or if I can help you out in any way, let me know.
