Posey in Benton/Calhoun County, Alabama
I'm looking for descendants of William E. or I. Posey b. Feb. 2, 1838 m. Ann Melissa Skinner. I know of two dtrs. Elizabeth and Martha C. Posey.
William Posey was buried at First Baptist Church Cemetery, in Anniston. Date unknown as his stone was broken
Quite a few years ago FBC was sold to another church. From what I have heard, this church paved over part of the cemetery and the rest has been used as a parking lot.You might expect this type of treatment from a company or business, but for another church to deliberately desecrate a cemetery is unimagineable.
A cousin went by the cemetery a while back and found some foot markers left in the ground and he said you can see where the headstones have been knocked down, thrown in the weeds, etc.
A survey in 1970 stated "stones broken and scattered"
A survey in 1996 states most of the markers are no longer in the cemetery at the time of the 1996 survey.
There are at least two CSA vets buried in this cemetery, John Lloyd and Benjamin Johnson, I don't know if William E. or I. Posey was or not, but he was of an age to have served.
This church was foreclosed on and sold in Jan. of this year.At this time, don't know who bought the land/church.
Hopefully, if enough family members of loved ones who are buried there contact the local gov't, historical groups, Veterans groups, etc. perhaps our loved ones may rest in peace.
