Posey Family Genealogy Forum

I know Michael Allison, and he's good at genealogy....he wants the proof, and that's the part that drives most of the Posey/Poschet nobility seekers crazy. I also descend from the Posey line...when they married into an Allanson/Allison line. First, the book that has the lists of Posey to Poschet to royalty is nice to read, but there is absolutely NO documentation in that book whatsoever. Red flag #1. Next, there is a book in the FHL in Salt Lake in French, printed in Belgium, about the fraud of the Poshet royal lines. These so-called royal lines were made up in the 1700s, I believe, to boost the prestige of the Poschets, but unfortunately, those trumped up lines were copied as gospel truth by some researcher who never researched out the original records. Red flag #2. It is true that books printed about lineages in SLC may contain errors, but the original microfilms of the actual documents: birth/marriage, etc., most likely don't...although it can happen. Finally, most people who have responded to this forum have forgotten the first principle in genealogy: Work from the known to the unknown. They're assuming that because it's in print it must be right. WRONG! You can't make assumptions that Poschet became Posey because someone else over a century decided that it was so...no matter how tempting. You'll have to trace Francis back to England...surely there are some records there of him....then you'll have to find his parents. If you find him but don't find his parents, you can't make the jump that they all were living in some castle in the Cambrai. As great as it all seems, you can't make a silk purse.....well, you get the idea. So, before everyone hastens to register for some royal society, please make sure you have the documentation to prove it. In the case of Pose/Poschet, it just doesn't seem to exist. It would be great if we all came down from those noble lines, but there is absolutely no proof. Of course, one could go to France and hope to find a record that good ol' Francois boarded a boat to England, but I don't think that will happen. It would be better to go to England and snoop there. Work back from what is known. To work from the unknown to the known is not only poor genealogical practice, it is a waste of valuable time and money.
