In all honesty, I'm not sure where to look ecept for England. I think Frederic Saunders is right that we start looking in English records only since that is the strongest possibility. In fact, there are no records to lead us anywhere else at this time. And I think we all need to be very open to all possible variations in spelling of the name.

You're right, there are no doubt lots of folks who care more for preserving a false image than knowning the truth. I wouldn't let them bother you too much -- they don't bother me in the least. Anyway, notice how they always vanish as soon as someone asks for proof of their claims?

The way I see it, we owe it to history to take good care of it. It's usually pretty clear who is being a good caretaker of history and who is abusing it. History is not always convenient.
