I've attempted to compare this James Portwood to the closest matches in the 1880 Census. When I look for any James Portwood b. within +/-5 years of 1859, three matches come up:
1) James M. Portwood, age 20 (b. c.1860), KS, single farm laborer living w/parents William & Elizabeth Portwood in Penn, Shelby Co., IL (p.155B). I have identified this James as the one who m. Jan. 12, 1881, Clark Co., IL to Ida M. Price (Bk. F, p.496), w/dau. Lela (b. c.1892, IL)
2) James Portwood, age 19 (b. c.1861), GA, single farm worker living w/parents Jessie & Mary Portwood in Dist. 604, Taliaferro Co., GA (p.356D). I have identified this James as James Bartow Portwood who m. (prob. 1880-1895) Minnie E. ___, w/ch. Roy Henry (b. Nov. 1896), William Loyd (b. Apr. 1899), & Helen Gertrude (b. July 23, 1913).
3) James Portwood, age 18 (b. c.1862), IL, single farmer living w/widowed mother Kansada Swan in Greene Co., IL (p.205B). I have identified this James as James Albert Portwood, son of Lewis Portwood & Canzada Ann 'Zady Ann' Grizzle. I know nothing else about this James.
The first two matches could not be the same as James Portwood who m. Nellie Floyd, but the third could possibly be the same person. If they are the same person, I have more information on the ancestors of both Lewis & Zady Ann and would like to know more about James Albert and his descendants.
I'm also aware of another James Portwood who falls within +/-5 years of the right age: James Portwood (b. c.1859, KY), son of Ennis Portwood & Elvira Mudd, who does not show up in the 1880 Census, but m. Dec. 6, 1883 in Church, Schuyler Co., IL to Mary L. Barber (Bk. C, p.159, lic. #8562; by Philip Skiles, M.G.; wit. Nathan Cornman). I don't have any information on children of this couple.
There are a several other James Portwood marriages listed on the IL Statewide Marriage Index, including a couple that I have not yet been able to identify, so the James from the 1900 Fulton Co., IL census could just as easily be some other unknown James Portwood instead of James Albert Portwood. One of those other James Portwood marriages is a James H. Portwood who m. Nov. 25, 1879, Fulton Co., IL to a Mary E. Noah (Bk. E, p.107, lic. #323). This seems likely to be a previous marriage for the same James who m. Nellie Floyd, due to their age difference in the 1900 Census. The H. could mean that he is not James Albert Portwood, or it could just be a typo for A. as there are a lot of typos in the marriage list.
On the other hand, there is also a entry for a Frederick Portwood who m. Feb. 11, 1891, Fulton Co., KY to a Mary Steadman (Bk. F, p.94, lic. #51). The James who was son of Ennis Portwood had a brother named Frederick, so perhaps Mary died and that James remarried to Nellie Floyd? Based on this plus the perfect fit of b. date, b. locations for him and his parents, I'd lean toward this as the most likely identification for the James Portwood who m. Nellie Floyd. Ennis Portwood is son of Samuel E. Portwood & Elizabeth Dozier. Samuel is son of Samuel C. 'Sam' Portwood (son of Page Portwood I & Ann Stallings) & Frances 'Franky' Evans (dau. of Peter Evans). Sam (m. Franky Evans) is brother of Lewid 'Ludy' Portwood (m. Elizabeth ___), father of Loyd Portwood (m. Sarah 'Sallie' Flatt), father of Lewis Portwood (m. Zady Ann Grizzle), father of James Albert Portwood.
