Perestrello da Mesquita
Posted by: John Cantwell Roberts (ID *****0220) Date: November 16, 2012 at 07:19:41

I am a social anthropolist and recently discovered a memorial to Felipe Perestrello da Mesquita abandoned in a small compound in South India. He was an in-law of Christopher Columbus. He appears to have been a missionary - the religious communities there were inchoate up to Diamper in 1599 so not necessarily a Franciscan or a Jesuit. The interesting item is the coat of arms on the memorial designating descent from the Mesquita, Noronha & Matos families and from the House of Lancaster. The memorial has been dated 1539-1540. Any help in establishing his direct ancestry is greatly appreciated.
