The origin of the name Araujo is in Galicia, North of Spain. Originally it was Aranxo, then it changed to Araujo, and it migrated around the 12th century to the province of Minho, in the North of Portugal, mainly in the geographical area of Arcos de Val-de-Vez (Vez is a river), also spellt as Arcos de Valdevez.
I hope this satisfies your curiosity.
I have found Araujos in almost every Continent, and also in Portuguese or Spanish non-speaking zones, including areas like US Virgin Islands, France, Sweden, Belgium, etc. just to name only a few.
Regards.
