Portugese Surnames - Maria, Mariano, Mariana
My partners Grandfather was from the Azores and jumped ship at Mangonui in New Zealand around 1860, where he hid in an attic for several months so he was not discovered. He then shortened his last name to 'Maria'(pronunced Marrea) to fit in better. We (the family)would now like to change the surname back to the original but are unsure of what it would be!The rest of the family thinks it could be Mariano or Mariana - but is this acceptable for a Portugese surname?I know Maria is a popular girls name - can anyone enlighten?
