Hi Bernie,
Are you in any way related to Caroline Whately-Smith? The reason I ask is that Caroline and I have for some time now exchanged messages on the subject of Rudolffo and Felizarda.
I am a member of the "Burmesters of Vila Nova de Gaia", but we only reached these shores in 1834. The family port business had existed since 1730 and had previously, according to all available evidence, been owned by a British branch of the Burmester family, who were co-founders of The Westminster Bank, a forebear of the current NatWest. Among the Treasurers of the British Factory House in Oporto there was a Ferdinand (or Franz, I'm not sure now) Burmester, who must have belonged to the British side of the family, as this was before the arrival of my great-great-grandfather Johann Wilhelm Burmester in Oporto in 1834. I am therefore led to conclude that, given the dates you provide, Rudolffo could have been a member of that branch, although his German-sounding name does raise some doubts!
I'll keep looking for the elusive Rudolffo and Felizarda.
Cheers
Alexandre Burmester
