Dear Gwendolyn:
I am not a specialist, but I will try to help.
Portugal and Spain have almost the same origin in the Iberian Peninsula.
Both languages, Spanish and Portuguese, are Latin descendants with same basic construction and are appeared in speaking at all. At least for me it is easier to understand a Spanish speaking, although it could be a little more difficult in inverse case ...
If I would write in Portuguese it would be: André Lopes da Cunha, being Lopes from his mother and Cunha from his father's family. Lopes in Spanish is changed to Lopez and probably Cunha is write as Cuña or Acuña or D'Acuña.
Could you say when your ancestor lived?
I am not sure, but sometime in the 18th century, they were used to put surnames in honor of a grandmother, however since a long time is normal the midlle name to be referred to the mother and the last to the father.
I complement that Galicia is a northern region of Spain whith proper ancient language, the Galego, very more similar to the Portuguese, as you can relate it is originated from Gaul and Celts too.
Good winds,
Romulo
