Manuel John E. Dears/Dyer/Dias
I'm trying to gather information about my great grandfather--please contact me if you have any connection to him:
Manuel Dyer b. May 25, 1841 at Fayal/Faial, the Azore Islands, Portugal. He served in the U.S. Civil War, GAR, with Co. A, 11th Maine Infantry (out of Augusta, Maine) between 1861-1863 under the name John E. Dears. The original spelling I'm told was most likely Dias.
After the war he lived at Fall River, Massachusetts, where he married Elizabeth J. Carey on June 22, 1875 (she was an Irish immigrant). They moved to Chelsea (outside of Boston) sometime before my grandfather was born in 1883.
Manuel was listed as a cigar maker. His marriage information lists his parents as Joseph and Mary (nee?) Dyer, but the original spelling was most likely Dias.
Manuel died in Chelsea July 17, 1917 and is buried at Holy Cross (Catholic) Cemetery, Malden, MA.His wife moved to Pennsylvania with son Frank and daughter Annie in the early 1920's.
Thanks for your help.
