I thought I might find the Portuguese naming patterns, but I see that nobody has answered your question. Here are my guesses: part of the name was apparently a place name because the parishes of Faial / Fayal, beginning in the north and going clockwise are Cedros, Salao, Ribeirinha, Pdero Miguel, Praia do Almoxarifado, Flamengos, Conceição, Horta, Angústias, Feteira, Castelo Branco, Capelo, & Praia do Norte.
Some of the names are originally patronymic. The German / Visigoth words hrod = fame, & ric = power, translate into English as Roderick, but Rodrigues, in which the es means son of, would be son of Rodrigo or Rui.
Do you know whether the church records of Pico & Faial are accessible for research?
