Joseph Antone Barrus (Barros) of Boston @1800-1820

My ancestor Joseph Antone Barrus married Mary Bacon in Boston in 1812. There is no civil record, but the church record (2nd Baptist) listed his name as Joseph Antone Barross.

He was a mariner as was his children including my gg-grandfather, Charles Augustus S. Barrus.

I suspect that he may be Portuguese and arrived in the US on early whaling ships long before the much bigger migration to New Bedford, etc.

Among other things, it is the name that is making me think so. Would the combined name of "Joseph Antone" in MA that early be anything other than Portuguese? I appreciate any thoughts on this or any suggestions on how I might be able to trace him. I would imagine that he came from the Portuguese Atlantic lslands, perhaps the Azores.

Thanks
Joe
