My mother was a PORTER before she married.

Her parents were Melvin Seth Thomas PORTER and Emma POOLE PORTER.

Melvin's parents were Alexander S. PORTER and Martha Ellen TESSINER(sp?)PORTER.

This is where I hit a road block on the PORTER side. I found Alexander (A.S.)and Martha w/8 children
1- Julius
2- Thomas (my grandfather)
3- Willie
4- Erastus
5- Charly
6- Lina (Line or Lyna?)
7- George
8- Sydney
in the Census of 1900 in Morgan Township in Spartenburg Co., SC, but I haven't been able to find anything further back for this part of the family.

Family history has it that Martha was a full blood CHEROKEE and that Alexander was disowned for marrying her, but no evidence has been found to support this.

They are said to have moved to Buncombe Co., NC where their first 2 or 3 children were born and then reconciled with the family and moved back to the Cowpens, SC(Spartenburg Co.)area to work as tenant farmers and raise their family.

Someone in the is said to have operated a mill in Spartenburg (possibly a lumber mill).

At some point after 1900, at least some of the children moved to Alamance and Orange counties of NC where they raised large families, but htere must have been some family who remained in SC because I have an uncle who moved there from Alamance Co., NC and stilll lives there today.

My mother recalls hearing her father tell that Martha lied to the Census takers so that the boys would not be considered old enough to go to war and this has been somewhat substantiated by other dates and inconsistancies in records that I have found.

She also remembers hearing her father recall stories of how as a child he and his cousins would sneak down to watch a relative while he worked as the community hangman, but she could not recall what relative it was.

I am also looking for more info on the TESSINER branch of the family. I don't even know if I have the correct spelling on the name, so if anyone has any info there please let me know.

I am happy to share what I have with anyone who needs it.

Thanks,
Lisa Blackwell
