I recently purchased a family album containing 17 studio portraits, among them the subject undated ones of a boy, estimated age 4 years, and a girl, estimated age 3 years, taken by Sterling, KS photographers. The faces are remarkably similar and the individuals are obviously brother and sister. The photos are identified on the back in the same period handwriting: "Floyd Porter" "Nellie Porter" I found the family listed in the 1895 Kansas State Census data and the 1900 U.S. Census data for Sterling, Rice Co., KS. They were the children of a hardware salesman, James W. Porter, born Nov 1854 in IL, and Jane A. (maiden name unknown), born May 1858 in IL. Floyd C. Porter was born Apr 1884 in KS, and Nellie M. Porter was born Apr 1888 in KS. I also found Floyds own family listed in the 1920 U.S. Census data, the 1925 Kansas State Census data, and the 1930 U.S. Census data for Sterling, Rice Co., KS. He married Grace M., born about 1880 in IL, and together they owned and operated a mortuary, residing at 213 E. Monroe Street. They had two children--Harry F., born about 1910 in KS, and Gertrude I., born about 1914 in KS. According to one public member tree posted on ancestry.com, Floyd C. Porter's full name is Floyd Carroll Porter and Grace M. Porter's full maiden name is Martha Susan Grace Smisor. Harry's middle name is Floyd and Gertrude's middle name is Irene. Other surnames appearing in this album are Burgess, Egerton, Hall, Hutchinson, McNabb, and Stanford. Contact me if you wish to view and/or acquire these photos.
