I have been doing intensive research on the Porter families of Ross County, Ohio and would like to correspond with anyone interested in these families. There are at least three distinct families in early Ross County, and I have found it necessary to try to sort them all out in order to understand my own Porter ancestry there. Family 1--Joshua Porter (1742-1812) of Baltimore County, Maryland had five sons and one daughter who settled in early Ross and adjacent counties between about 1796 and 1810 (George, Catherine, Joshua, Rezin, Elisha and Peter). Family 2--James Porter of Baltimore County, Maryland (ca. 1745-post 1830) settled before 1800 in Ross County. He reportedly had five sons and at least one daughter. I have been able to identify three of the sons and a daughter (Eli, Peter, James and Nancy). It is likely that this James and Joshua were related, but I have been unable to document this at this time. Family 3--An unknown Porter (possibly John) settled in Ross County in 1806. He was from Delaware and had at least two sons and one daughter (Henry, George and Mary, who married Edward Tiffin, first governor of the state of Ohio). I would very much like to share information with anyone interested in any one of these three families, either on list or off list. David Hudson Notify Administrator about this message?
