Henry L. E. Porter and Ella May Milbury of Nova Scotia
howdy all,
I have read this forum off and on for a couple years now and learned a lot of things, including where to physically go for materials in MA and Nova Scotia when money allows. Thanks for that data. I only found out last year I was tied to Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia.
While I wait for that trip to be possible, I have a query for info surrounding the married couple in the subject line: Henry L. E. Porter born Harry L. E. Porter in 1868 in Yarmouth county, NS, son of James M. (tho the birth records all use A.) Porter and Priscilla Foote. Henry's wife in 1891 Ella May Milbury (Milberry) born in Digby County, NS in 1866 to James Simeon Milbury (Milberry) and Melissa Gower. Mariem Knapp was most helpful in providing some pages from a published Porter genealogy, but my bigger questions still remain.
Has anyone ran across another Henry E. Porter in Deerfield, Yarmouth, NS during their own searches or even Yarmouth county in general? I am pretty certain that the Ella married to the above Henry was the Digby county result if you look for Ella M's in Nova Scotia born around that time (the others I can find got married to other people). My grandfather was Charles Henry Elsworth Porter born in Deerfield, Yarmouth County in 1897, son of a Henry E. (Emerson) Porter also of Nova Scotia. The Henry I am finding and the one I am descended from had the same birth year but one of our trees has a different birth date than his birth record (I cannot find the source for our date or middle name of Emerson though one of Charles' sons had a middle name of Emerson also). My Henry was put down as Harry E. Porter on his son's wedding certificate in 1918, even though he is listed as Henry E. Porter on Charles' death certificate in 1946.
I am tempted to say they are one in the same, but until I can find more data I only have a hunch and a lot of coincidences. Both Henry's were born in/around Deerfield, Yarmouth in 1868. Several of James A/M's children's birth records available online say Henry's older sister of one year was born in Deerfield, though around this time they may have been living in Pembroke. Both Henry's married Ella M's Millbury's around the same time. They also had sons named Charles H the same year. They also settled in Massachusetts. Most of the records for the other Henry point to Hamilton, Essex county, but I know our Charles H (Henry) married and lived in Somerville, Middlesex county in 1918 (the same year my father was born). Where his father Henry settled I am not sure besides MA. Mariem Knapp's tree only lists children Nellie and Melissa, but census, ship, and other tree records show their children as Euella, Melissa and Charles making me wonder who Nellie is.
I am hoping to track down a wedding certificate for Ella M. and Henry E. (via mail as soon as clerks emailed tell me which office may have the data to purchase) to solve this once and for all but any additional data or directions people can recommend would be wonderful. I have tapped out a lot of ancestry's census data, city directories, ship records, materials on familysearch.org, and scanned files on novascotiagenealogy.com. I found my Boston cousins I never thought I would locate but have plenty of Nova Scotia ground to cover. Apologies for the length. It's really difficult to get across what I already have found/don't need, while at the same time being grateful for anything new. Reading posts here you see how one little fact can arouse someone's interest who may have overlooked it otherwise.
Thanks you very much. Good luck on your own hunt.
