Porters in Fauquier Co. VA
My suspicion is that Anne Ball who died in Fauquier in 1813 and was the widow of Benjamin (d. 1807) was possibly a Porter. That suspicion is based upon Edward Ball, Thomas Porter and William Dulin being witnesses to Benjamin's first Fauquier land acquisition in 1761. Edward is Benjamin's brother and William is his B-I-L. I do not believe Ann was a Dulin. This leaves Thomas
Porter as possibly representing the dower interests of Anne as would be customary.
Benjamin and Ann were married bef. 1759 based upon the birth of their oldest child (David). Where they were married remains a mystery, but likely Hamilton Parish. We now know that Benjamin's father was Edward Jr. who resided in Overwharton Parish Stafford - later to become Prince William) following his migration from Middlesex Co. With parish redistricting, this area fell to Hamilton Parish. The location is on the upper reaches of Licking Run in present day Fauquier.
Previous research done on this Thomas Porter is suspect at best. It has been claimed Thomas was b. ca. 1734 in Isle of Wight (Eng. or VA) or Gloucester, was married to Sarah Weaver, and was the sibling of Samuel. Virtually no supporting evidence for any of this has been located other than his wife was a Sarah. Apparently much of this came from a couple early DAR apps which have been shown to be inaccurate.
There were three Porters of the same generation in Fauquier prior to the RW who appear connected: William, Thomas and Samuel. There may in fact be more. This William, Thomas and Samuel interacted and their children even intermarried. It had been believed they descended from Thomas and Ann (Calvert) Porter of Stafford but research does not show this to be so.
From tax records the children of William Porter appear to be Judithon/Jedathan and Eppa (Epaphroditus) who md. Elizabeth Porter, d/o Thomas. Interestingly, these given names also appear among the Porter family of Lancaster/Westmoreland. That gives a whole new perspective.
It may be that I'm looking at non-related Porters, but there is a distinct closeness between these three men, each witnessing deeds and posting securities for the other.
For decades, we've searched for the identity of Anne, wife of Benjamin Ball. Given location and timing, things we weren't sure of years ago, it seems a possibility Anne was a Porter - but, I don't know how I'll ever prove it.
Any help or comments is appreciated.
Regards...
Jim Ball
