Thank you for the response. The conclusion, which may be correct, that Elizabeth (the second wife of Nathaniel Porter) was Elizabeth Groves (daughter of Philip Groves), seems to be based entirely and exclusively upon the codicil of Philip Groves (see below) in which Philip refers to Nathaniel Porter's second wife Elizabeth as his (Philip's) "daughter".Savage (and an array of others) seem to use that reference to infer that Elizabeth who married Nathaniel Porter was a daughter of Philip (and sister of Hannah). However, D. L. Jacobus in his well-regarded work History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield somehow came to a different conclusion, saying that Nathaniel Porter m. (2) Elizabeth Baldwin, dau. of John, bapt. 19 Aug 1649, but Jacobus cites no specific records for this conclusion.Jacobus argues that Philip Grove's codicil mentioning his "daughter Elizabeth" is in fact a reference to the second wife (Elizabeth Baldwin) of Nathaniel Porter, a practice which was not altogether unheard of during this period, espcially in probate records.I would add (a) that Jacobus gives the date of death of Elizabeth, wife of Nathaniel Porter, as 6 Feb 1683/84, and so (b) at the time that Philip Grove wrote his codicil on 25 Jan. 1676, Elizabeth was already married (son John Porter was b. 28 Mar 1674) and she was still living.
Susan Woodruff Abbott in Families of Early Milford, Connecticut, states that Elizabeth Baldwin, daughter of John Balwin and his first wife Mary (), was " bpt. 19 Aug 1649 . . . mar. () Porter".
Woodruff's account suggests to me a reference, perhaps in probate records, to the daughter of John Baldwin as "Elizabeth Porter".If so, does anyone have a transcript or citaton of such a record (probate or otherwise) which indicates that Elizabeth, daughter of John and Mary Baldwin, married a Porter? If so, please post to this forum for the benefit of all.If such a record does exist, I believe that the theory that Nathaniel Porter married Elizabeth Groves may be permanently discarded.Alternately, if further evidence exists that Philip Groves even had at all a daughter Elizabeth, that would certainly tilt the conclusion in the opposite direction, and I ask that information be posted for all to analyze.
Thank you for you assistance.
