Fran:Sounds like the same Rev. John A. Porter. He was born in 1822, died in 1908. When a young boy, his family came to Charleston, SC from Brooklyn, NY.This is the information, I have on his families. I don't know too many exact dates, though.
His first wife was Emily Cooper who died in 1858. Their children were: Sallie who married a Mr. Huggins, Mattie who married a Mr. McMillan and James Smiley Porter (my great grandfather, also a Methodist Minister)who married a Catherine Livingston of Newberry Co., SC.
The only name I had for his second wife was Miss Burnheim(?)but from some census records have discovered her first name to be Alvina.Their children were Ella, Emma, Carrie, Lily and Herman.I do not know who they may have married but know that Herman lived in Tampa, Fl as that is where John A. Porter is buried.
I believe that John A. Porter was ordained in 1841 and being a Methodist Minister moved around quite frequently so he is indeed elusive.I do think he was living in Charleston in 1861.In 1870, they were living in Marion Co.(this I'm sure of).By 1880, they were living in Georgetown Co. and when the letter I mention was written(1885) he was in Richland Co.I have reason to believe (but am not certain) his second wife is buried in Marlboro Co.
During the Civil War John A. Porter was a Chaplain with Holcombes Legion, SC Infantry.
We just don't know who his parents were. Though they came from Brooklyn, the letter says that his father was born in PA.The family of Commodore David Porter originated in MA.Supposedly they are related. If there's anything in your Bible that may give a hint to the name of John Porter's parents, please let me know.
Some of the names mentioned are unfamiliar to me but must be connected in some way. Perhaps married names of some of his other daughters.
I don't know too many more details on John A. Porter but don't hesitate to ask.
Robert
