George Thomas Porter b. 1829 Anson Co., NC married Caroline Throgmorton b. 1829 NC
There is a rumor that says George T. Porter abandoned his wife and children and went to Texas. It is just that! A rumor which is not True. George T. Porter did not go to Texas and die there. He died an honorable death while serving in the Civil War as proven by the following military record.
Co. I, 43 Regiment NC Troops
Porter, George T. Private
Born Anson Co., NC farmer prior to enlisting
Enlisted February 25, 1862 age 33
Present or accounted for until wounded in the left lung at
or near the Totopotomoy River, Virginia and captured on
or about May 30, 1864. Hospitalized at Washington, D.C.,
where he died on June 13/14, 1864, of wounds.
Caroline Throgmorton's parents have not yet been proven, (but I do have my specultions). One of the many stories Caroline's granddaughter repeated to me is a story told to her by her father William F. Porter (son of Caroline and George). A short version is: Caroline and George met at a church function and George fell instantly in love with her. To prove his love he would ride his horse 3 to 4 times a week all the way to the next county where she lived after working in the fields all day. On the way, he would gather large bunches of wild flowers and give them to her (when they were in bloom). In the winter it was so cold, that his hands would be frost bitten by the time he reached her home from the 2 hour ride, but this would not stop him and he continued to do it until she finally agreed to marry him. Even after their marriage he continued to bring her large bunches of wild flowers.
This is not only a beautiful romantic story. It gives us a clue that Caroline's family was in a surrounding county to Anson Co., NC. It is also known that Caroline had a sister named Ebbie Throgmorton that married a Sullivan.
