Ref question of "cousins" Julius N Porter andwife Behethland Porter.
The following are my "sources" of data on the "cousiness" of these two people. In as much as I have never been able to trace the parantage of Julius, I have no real proof one way or the other.
Earliest Ref: Historic Georgia Families compiled by L.W.Rigsby, pub 1925-28, p.144.
"According to information furnished by Mrs. Julia Porter Kitchens, Danville, GA., Mrs. Kitchens' great-grandmother was Behethland Porter who married her first cousin, Julius Porter.....Mrs. Kitchens cannot identify her great-grandfather, Julius Porter; although, Mr. J. E. Hendrix states that his mother spoke of him as 'Uncle Julius.' The writer thinks that said Julius Porter was probably a nephew of Joseph Porter who married Rose Taliaferro, and that Behethland (Porter) wife of Julis, was a daughter of Joseph and Rose (Taliaferro) Porter, and the same Behethland who is mentioned in the will of her father in 1825".Mr. Hendrix'es mother would be Missourie Ellafair Porter, dau. of Richard Taliaferro Porter.
Family Puzzlers, Dec 20 1973 #322 published the "Porter Family Bible -- owned by the late Paul Hoover, who dies January 1973, Irwinton,GA. and contributed by Mr. Joseph T. Maddox".This lists the entry "Bethleland Porter b.6-13-1793 (married cousin, Julius Porter)".HOWEVER,there is a footnote at the end of the Bible record which is not always with it:"Mr. Maddox added information found in parenthesis."Mr Maddox, in a letter to Mr. Julius W. Ryals, 2 Feb. 1981, wrote "The Bible Record of Josph Porter is in the hands of a Mrs. McGowan of Dublin, GA.She is the daughter of Paul Hoover, deceased.Mrs. McGowan is near 70 years old and I have not seen her for several years.I do recall that it was very difficult to decipher...."Mr. Maddox was a historian and genealogist of Wilkinson Co., GA.I have copies of much of his correspondence but do not find he ever recanted or cast into doubt the "cousiness".In his book, The History of Wilkinson Co., GA, p.370, he writes:Porter section:"Julius N Portre b.1800 SC d.1865 wife Bethleland Taliaferro b.1793....(NOTE: Julius Porter's wife was Bethleland Porter not Taliaferro. She was his first cousin.)"
