I am a descendant of James POrteous 1763 born in Dumfries SCT. Recent information tells me he is the son of John Porteous (1737-1805) and Joan Thorburn (1738-1826) both born in Dumfries. I have information in the form of a letter that was in my grandmothers (Lola May Porteous) possession. This letter states that our family left France in the 1600s to avoid religious persecution. They settled in Scotland. I dont know if this is family lore but I have not found any information to support it. I know Porteous is a long standing family in SCT but there was traffic back and forth in the 1500s due to political alliances with France. Is anyone aware of parts of the Porteous clan who may have left SCT in the 1500s and returned in the 1600??
