Sarah E. Powell (married Paul Porche?)
SARAH ELIZABETH WILLIAMS was born c. 1843 in Kentucky or Tennessee. She married my Great-grandfather, HENRY A. POWELL, about June 1860 in Marshall (or Graves) County, Kentucky or Randolph County, Arkansas. They lived first near Success, Little Black Township, Randolph County, Arkansas.
Henry served with 12th Missouri Infantry, Confederate Army, until his brother, THOMAS POWELL, died at the POW camp in Alton, Illinois, at which time he deserted and returned home to provide for his own and his brother's families.
Henry and Sarah Elizabeth were living near Charleston, Long Prairie Township, Mississippi County, Missouri when the 1880 U. S. Census was conducted. Henry was kicked to death by a horse (or mule) the following month (July 1880).
Sarah Elizabeth is known to have remarried three times: to JOHN PELLAM in 1882, to ABNER C. RUSSELL in 1883 and to WILLIAM E. SMALL in 1886. She is said to have also marrieda PAUL PORCH (or PORSCH) in the 1890's.
She is believed to have died before 1899. According to one family story, she died of burns sustained when her dress caught fire while she was either cooking on a wood-burning stove or boiling water in a kiln or kettle.
Henry and Sarah Elizabeth's known children are Henry A. (born c. 1861), Susannah Rebecca (c. 1862), Benjamin F. "Frank" (c. 1868), Charles D. "Charlie" (1873) and Robert A. "Rob" & William J. "Jack" (twins born in 1876). Charlie Powell, who died in 1945, was my Grandfather.
