Nancy,
There was a group of cavalry in the Civil War from Taylor Co FL, the 2nd Fla Cav, Union Army, called Strickland's Rangers, after William Wilson STRICKLAND, who commanded them. Many of the members were refugees from the Confederacy, who had asked the US for protection. There were several POPPELLs in the unit, including a Paul POPPELL. I will send you a roster off-line. William Wilson STRICKLAND was a s/o Stephen D STRICKLAND, who m 1st, a Miss POPPELL, and m 2nd a Rachel Shaw Chancy (or Chancy Shaw?, who was WWS's mom). Have you attempted to find Paul's CW pension records? I found interesting info in Jackson Sapp's widow's pension request, he was in the same unit.
