Did he have social security numbers? http://ssdi.rootsweb.com
Do you know if he was naturalized citizen? You do need to find his place of birth among US documents in order to proceed with the research into "old country".

Try locating his manifest. He could have come thru Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, Galveston or Canada.
