The mystery of Poplett, Thomas 1910 England

Ellen (Nellie)Poplett arrived here on the Majestic in the port of New York on August 11, 1910. With her were children: Ellen, 15, Ethel,9, Thomas 8, Rose, 3 and John 10 months. The mystery is that she travelled under the name of "Stracey" and stated that she was meeting her husband Thomas Stracey in New York. Years later we found that she was actually Ellen Poplett, formerly Chappell and that her husband was really Thomas Poplett. This was discovered by the birth certificates of their children,Thomas and Rose. The mystery is why did they assume other names here in the United States. My mother, Rose, upon her deathbed, claimed that she was a "stolen child". Does anyone out there know anything about a Thomas Poplett leaving Fulham in 1910, or thereabout?
