I've heard the same about a pople family feud, apparently the family used to be the Pople-Prewitts, but two brothers had an argument and one set became the Poples, the other the Prewitts.I've no idea when this happened, however my father told me so I'm guessing it was either 19th or 20th century.
I did do a little looking into the history of the surname, and I've read that the name comes from an old English word, "Poebel", translates as pebble. There is a Pople coat of arms, the motto being "We are not here for ourselves" - I'd quote you the Latin if I could!I'm also told that historically we hail from the Somerset levels area, but I've seen alternative to that saying it's a Lancashire name.I've always thought that the Somerset option was the likelier, given the predominance of the surname there still, and historically - I've just been looking through some ancestral sites and there's a listing for an Elizabeth Pople from the 17th century.
Cheers
Simon.
