INFORMATION ON THE POPE, BRIDGER, AND LISSON FAMILIES THAT SHOULD BE CLEARED AND ADJUSTED FROM ALL TREES.
COL. JOSEPH BRIDGER
Col. Joseph Bridger Sr. was born in Gloucester, England c 1630, died in Isle of With VirginiaApril 15, 1686. He arrived in America c 1752.He mar. Hester Pitt, daughter of Robert Pit and Hester Steven.Col. Joseph Bridger appears on records as member of the House of Burgess, Isle of Wight 1657. He held many titles too numerous to mention here. He was the Representative of the Royalist. He was the most prominent and probably the wealthiest man of his time. He owned many plantations and 2000 acres of land. His home plantation was “White Marsh.”He was on Gov. Berkeley’s Court. He was a merchant in the business of trading Virginia Tobacco for commodities needed by the Colonist. His will names all children and if married their married names. He names his children and wife in will. His estate and Inventory was enormous. Will signed Aug. 3, 1683, estate divided July 16, 1686. (Note his daughter Mary was not married at the signing of his will in 1683, but was married at the division of his estate in 1686. It would be impossible for her to be the wife of William (Mary/Marie) since according to Quaker records William and Marie’s children were born in the 1660’s. And the Joseph Bridger’s estate division names the husband receiving their wife’s estate. The husbands got the estate not the wives according to law back then.It names the division as “Receipt of Thomas Godwin husband of Martha, Receipt of Thomas Lear for his wife Elizabeth. Thomas Lear was a prominent planter in Nansemond Co., Va. Receipt of Capt. Richard Tibboth for his wife MaryCapt. Richard Tibboth was master of the ship “Anne and Mary,” which went between England and the James River in Virginia. Also note by the marriage of Mary Bridger and Capt. Tibboth c 1685,William Pope and his wife Mary were married c 1658, Henry Pope, son was given gift deed from Henry Bozman in 1685.Henry was born 1663 and at the time was 22 years of age. This was probably a marriage gift, but it does not state on the deed. (Note Mary Bridger was just getting married in 1685. And William and Marie were about 55 yrs of age and had all of his children.)
Col. Joseph’s Will mentionswife, Hester, Son, Samuel Bridger, Son William Bridger, Daughter Martha Godwin, (married . Thomas Godwin of Nansemond,) Daughter Mary Bridger (she was not married in will but she married 1685 Capt. Richard Tibboth, Master of the ship “Mary and Anne.” (not William Pope) Daughter Elizabeth Bridger mar. Thomas Lear, Daughter Hester Bridger mar. George Wilkinson, Son Samuel Bridger mar. Elizabeth Woory ,(She was married previously) Son William mar. Mrs. Elizabeth Caufield of Surry Co. ,Son Joseph Bridger mar. Elizabeth Norsworthy. His family and their marriages is well documented by Westmoreland Records and a history of him appears in books written of early Virginians.Thomas Norsworthyy’s will Deed of Trust to Joseph Bridger and Thomas Godwyn (Godwin Feb. 27, I Thomas Norsworthy of the Isle of Wightdo for myself and my heirs –their heirs—this 27th day of February, anno 1674/5.Wit; Thomas Godwin Jr,Joseph Bridger Jr., Rich. Norris.Isle of Wight Record of Wills, Deeds etc. Vol. 1, 1662-1715. P 334. It has been stated by researchers that William Pope mar. Mary Bridger (Bridges) daughter of Joseph Bridger and Hester Pitt. This was probably the conclusion of some early research and has been passed down through all generations.William Pope was a friend and neighbor of Joseph Bridger, Thomas Godwin, and relative of Tristram Norsworthy. He knew them all as friends,
Joseph Bridger’s history is extensive and well documented in William and Mary Quarterly Vol. 7 #4.April 1899, pp 205-315.
WILLIAM POPE
By these records it is proven William Pope did not marry Mary Bridger.
James Long sold 200 acres to Capt. Thomas Godwin in a deed dated 1672, and given by the will of Edmond .Wit Joseph Garner, William Pope Sr..

Feb. 1, 1766/7.As noted above William Pope Sr. born c 1630/40. Died by 1706/7 received a patent 1665 and Mary Bridger stated as his wife was just an infant at the time. All of William and Mary/Marie’s children were all born by Quaker records 1660’s. William Pope Jr was born 1662, Henry Pope was born 1663. Mary Bridger was not born until about 1669, so how could she have been married to William Pope.Mary Bridger was single at the signing of her father’s will in 1683, but was married in 1686 to Capt. Richard Tibboth.
William Pope and wife MarieI believe Marie Bozman, still living in Nansemond County Virginia at that time. All of the land of William Pope’s was mentioned in many deeds of the children
ANN POPE WIFE OF JOHN WASHINGTON
Ann Pope, daughter of Nathaniel Pope, was the FIRST WIFE of John Washington. They had the only children John Washington fathered. They wereJohn Washington, Ann Washington and Lawrence Washington. Lawrence Washington wasthe father of George Washington.
In John Washington’s will he stated to be buried by his wife Ann, the mother of his children. Ann Pope is the only one that had children. The only one noted to have lived with them was the son of Ann Brett, Samuel Brett/Britt. who went to England to settle his mother’s estate by her first husband after her death. This was his second wife. After the death ofAnn Pope, John Washington married the 2nd Ann, and the marriage to widow Ann of Walter Broadhurst, and the widow of Henry Brett. She had been married twice before.Walter Broadhurst died about Feb. 12, 1659, while John Washington was still married to Ann Pope, and the birth of their son’s Lawrence Washington, baptism was announced Sept. 1659, in Maryland.Ann Broadhurst as the widowof Walter Broadhurst, and after Walter Broadhurst death in 1659, she married 2nd Henry Brett and as Ann Broadhurst Brett, widow, she married 3rd John Washington, Westmoreland, Court 28th September, 1670, and May 31, 1671, another statement “Lt. Col. Washington, who intermarried with Mrs. Anne Brett ye administratrix of Henry Brett of Plymouth, merchant, deceased. She could also be a sister of Frances Gerrard but I did not pursue the investigation although there is a great possibility she was.His last wife was Frances Gerrard Appleton, widow of Capt. John Appleton, or at least a marriage license.John Washington diedafter marrying Frances. And his deceased 2nd wife Ann Brett, had a son Samuel Brett by her husband Henry Brett. This son, Samuel Brett, went to England to settled his mother’s estate from her previous husband and his father Walter Brett, who had property in England. He also instigated a suit to claim part of the estate of John Washington. The DAR does not recognize anyone other than Ann Pope as the ancestor of George Washington left a pedigree stating his grandfather was Col. Nathaniel Pope.
I could write much more but this family is well documented.
DANIEL LISSON, INDIAN TRADER AND NEGOCIATOR FOR THE GOVERNMENT.
Clearing Daniel Lisson (Sisson) Name.Evidently many of the transcribers of documents could not decipher the L from the S because they both looked alike in writing of the script. So Daniel Lisson name can only be determined from family documents.
