Marie -

I am trying to figure out if the Wiley M. Pope of the following paragraphs is the same as "your" Wiley M. Pope, whom I think was the husband of Mary Stewart, Eliza Jane Livingstone and Marth E. Williams Bryan (if I have followed your correspondence correctly.)

On Sept. 27th, 1846, Wiley M. Pope of Washington, GA, and Mary Skinner of Burke County, planning to marry, executed an antenuptial contract, because both had children and both owned real estate. It was recorded in the Burke County Deed Book 9 1/2, page 470. Mary Skinner was the daughter-in-law of Jonas Skinner, (who in 1840 had a farm in the 71rst Militia Disctrict, Burke County) and the mother of William Skinner; she belonged to the Bark Camp Baptist church in Burke County and died on 7/14/1889.

This contract was witnessed by J.W. Roberts, (who was the son of my gggrandfather, Green Roberts, by Green's first marriage) and by Jesse Leaptrot, (who later married Green's daughter, Emily Didamy, of Green's second marriage.) Jonas Skinner, Jesse Leaptrot and Green Roberts had adjoining farms in Burke County in 1840. Furthermore, according to family legend, Green Roberts was raised by a Skinner family, because he didn't get along with his stepfather, whose name is unknown. On March 26th, 1849, this Wiley M. Pope officiated at the wedding of Green Roberts to his third wife, Margaret A. Sellers, recorded in the Washington County Marriage Book A. (I am a descendant of Green's fourth marriage to Elizabeth Guin.)

Did "your" Wiley M. marry a fourth time? The fact that Wiley M. already had children, and the dates of their births, suggest that Mary Skinner and Mary Stewart were not the same person... is this a different Wiley M. Pope? (unlikely that there would be two different Wiley Popes in the same time and the same area who were both preachers) Did "your" Wiley M. marry a fourth time...? or perhaps the marriage never took place...?

Green Roberts is my "brickwall" so I am trying every angle to find out any information about him... At first, it appeared that Green's son and son-in-law-to-be, who were neighbors of Jonas Skinner, might have urged this contract on Mary Skinner, while trying to protect the interests of Skinner's grandchildren, when his widowed daughter-in-law was about to take Skinner family inheritances into another marriage (with Pope)... However, since Pope and Green Roberts remained "connected" enough that Pope later officiated at Green Roberts's third marriage, it appears that Green Roberts and Wiley Pope had some sort of friendship or familial relationship... perhaps through the Skinner family into which Mary, Pope's wife, had married before...?

Do any of these surnames (Roberts, Skinner, Leaptrot) rings bells in your Pope research?

Marilyn Roberts Washburn
