Could you please provide documentation for Jacob Pope, father of Pilgrim, having a number of wives? I have not heard this before but I do know the Jacobs Pope are being confused in Pope research and it appears the Sampsons are as well. I have no definitive answers. I have never seen proof that Jacob's wife Jane was a Williams other than submissions (without documentation). It is possible considering all the dealings they had with Williamses in Edgecombe Co., NC. Others have said she was a Brasswell but no proof there either. There was a claim by a non-desc. once (in 1995) that Jacob Pope was the same who was also married to Patience but that Jacob's inventory was taken by Patience 15 May 1752 so a different Jacob. "Bible Records of Early Edgecombe North Carolina" by Williams & Griffin 1958 has an entry from Bible of Sampson Pope and wife Susannah Thomas m.1741. It says his parents were Jacob and Mourning Pope. Sampson's children were Solomon, Elijah, Jacob and Henry. These names could be leading to some confusion, too, and dates need to be reconciled carefully. Jacob Pope's will written 1 May 1770, proved at May Court 1772, named wife Jane; grandson Elijah Pope; sons Pilgrim and Sampson; daus Mourning Wimberley, Rebeccah Sykes and Mary Surginer. Pilgrim was exec'r and grandson Elijah Pope was reversionary heir of his grandmother Jane. Wit. were Rob't Diggs, John Surginer (son-in-law) and Sarah Surginer (sis of John). Elijah's accounts book gives death date of his grandfather as 20 May 1772 and Elijah sold his inherited estate in 1784 indicating that Jane had died by that date. On the other hand the intestate estate of Jacob Pope Jr. was ordered 21 Feb 1744 with inventory returned by Sampson Pope, Ex'r, on 20 Nov 1744 (court minutes). This is obviously a different Jacob and Sampson than Jacob who d.1772. Sampson who married Susannah Thomas in 1741 certainly would have been old enough to have been ex'r of this estate but since Pilgrim Pope was not born until 1739, his brother Sampson would not likely have been old enough to be ex'r of the estate of Jacob Jr. 1744. A deed of sale from Jacob Pope and Elizabeth his wife and Sampson Pope and Susannah his wife to Richard Vick was acknowledged 24 Nov 1769 - was this Jacob a son of Sampson, brother, who? Any proof? This is not Jacob who left a will in 1770 naming wife Jane because Jane is proven in deeds to have been married to Jacob Pope, father of Pilgrim, earlier than 1769. Jacob and wife Elizabeth were still living in 1777 in a deed to Robt Diggs; Pilgrim Pope, Wimberley, Fort and Dickinson, witnesses. Jacob Pope Sr. deed to Jacob Pope Jr. (son of Sampson Pope and grandson to the aforesaid Jacob Pope Sr.) 1759 ("Abstracts of Early Deeds of Edgecombe County, North Carolina 1759-1772" by Watson). This seems to be the same 200 acres Jacob and Elizabeth Pope sold in 1777. Jacob who married Jane did not have a son named Jacob (or at least who he claimed in his will, nor did he mention having already provided for other children.) It appears Sampson's son Jacob was referred to as "Jr." to differentiate from his grandfather Jacob (married to Mourning) and obviously not the Jacob Pope Jr. for whom Sampson returned inventory in 1744 although I have also seen claims Sampson's son married a Sarah Bawkins but again no documentation provided. So again, claimees of the Jacobs and Sampsons need to be careful with dates. Jacob and his wife Jean (sic) made a deed of gift to son Pilgrim Pope 27 Sep 1762 of a tract of land "being part of the same tract whereon said Jacob Pope then lived and part of a patent to Jacob Pope, Senr, bearing date 1730." So were Sampson and Jacob brothers and sons of Jacob Sr., with Sampson being the eldest since he was ex'r of estate in 1744 and was he the Jacob who married Jane? Then who was Jacob JUNIOR of the 1744 inventory by Sampson? Or was "Jr." a clerk's error or perhaps even the transcribers? Jacob and Jane had a dau named Mourning and a son named Sampson so would appear to be in the mix, but naming doesn't prove anything. So I am most interested in your documentation and how you have put together the Sampsons and Jacobs Pope. You probably have other sources than I do which could change the picture.
