I thought all Pontons came from Warminster. ;) There sure are a mess of them, anyhow, undoubtedly all related somehow or other. I'm wondering whether you might have some idea how! My grx2 grandmother was Mary Ponton, apparently born in Kent -- baptised in Canterbury 19 December 1824, daughter of William & Elizabeth. In the 1851 and 1871 censuses, there is a William Ponton in Faversham born abt 1801 in Warminster, with daughter Amelia born 1844 in Faversham. He was a Chelsea Pensioner, i.e. former military. On my Mary's marriage certificate, her father is identified as William Ponton, soldier. So I'm convinced that the William Ponton born abt 1801 in Warminster must be mine -- my grx3 grandfather. But I can't positively identify him in 1841 or 1861, or find a birth or marriage for him in the IGI, so I'm kind of stuck. There's a John William Ponton in Faversham, Kent, in 1841 and 1851, born in Manchester in Feb 1825, whose birth is in the IGI ("Ponton or Pouton"), but his parents are William Ponton and Mary Dolan. And there are Pontons of my William's generation in Faversham, but they were born there. There's a William Ponton, gunner, born in Warminster, in Devon in the censuses, but his wife is Johanna. I'm wondering whether mine is the William, ag lab, in Warminster in 1841: William 40 Elizabeth 35 not born in county William 6 Elizabeth 5 Edward 4 Sarah 2 n.k. 1 week Sarah Wilcox, 65, pauper, not born in county. I wonder whether Sarah was Elizabeth's mother. It seems a little unlikely they'd also have a daughter Mary, 15, I think, with nobody else over age 6. Although if Elizabeth was from Kent, for instance, that could explain Mary being there. I dunno. ... Okay, well I just blew that theory: ELIZABETH WILLCOX Spouse: WILLIAM PONTON Marriage: 26 JUL 1829 Saint Denys, Warminster, Wiltshire, England Not likely mine. The funny thing is that the granddaughter of William Ponton who was apparently of Warminster, married, in Kent, the grandson of a couple from Mere -- the two grandchildren were my great-grandparents, both born in Canterbury. And they relocated to Salisbury! Before I discovered on-line genealogy resources, I thought my grandfather's family was from Wiltshire because he grew up in Salisbury, and it turns out I was wrong, and then right again, in two different directions. So this is your Anne: Ann PONTON Birth: 1779 Warminster, Wiltshire, England Spouse: James ADLAM Marriage: 30 MAY 1802 Warminster, Wiltshire, England -- undocumented info in the IGI, of course. My bet would be that all of the Pontons in this batch: 1. ELIZABETH PONTON - I Marriage: 05 SEP 1782 Saint Denys, Warminster, Wiltshire, England 2. MARTHA PONTON - Marriage: 24 OCT 1780 Saint Denys, Warminster, Wiltshire, England 3. JOHN PONTON - Marriage: 01 JAN 1784 Saint Denys, Warminster, Wiltshire, England 4. ANN PONTON - Marriage: 01 JAN 1784 Saint Denys, Warminster, Wiltshire, England 5. WILLIAM PONTON - Marriage: 09 AUG 1780 Saint Denys, Warminster, Wiltshire, England were siblings, anyhow. But John and William are young to be your Anne's parents. Now, John might have had a younger son named William ... Anyhow -- maybe you've had news since you wrote this post, maybe something in here will sound familiar, maybe you'll see this post. ;) If you think there's anything useful we can exchange, do let me know!
