Joseph Andre Pont was from Marseille, France and travelled to Louisiana about 1785. I never heard of his going thru Ellis Island. I was taught that he sailed from Marseille directly to the existing French "New World" city of New Orleans. The story passed down is that he must have preferred his middle name, so that when others would see him on the street, "Hello Mr. Andre Pont, how are you today?". And it stuck. Some of his children and grandchildren where given the last name of Andrepont, combining his mother's French "Andre" with his father's Scottish "Pont". Truly, 'Made in America'! I will have to consult the book to find Joseph Andrepont. I think I remember seeing him before in the book. I will do that and try to email you directly. The research book I have was written with data collected from families, church records, parish (county) records, state data, and even US Census data. It took my cousin about three years in the mid 1970's to collect the data with help from my grandmother and my cousin's aunt. I'll be happy to look up infomation for you.
