Lil Pomroy info..cool!!! William Markwell Pomroy?
WHAT'S IN THE NAME?
What names are included in the study?
This study focuses on the four names in our banner, viz. Pomeroy, Pomroy, Pomery and Pummery, plus Pumroy (which is today found only in the USA) and various double-barreled names like de la Pomerai that originated during the last century.
There are no modern British instances of Pommery. There are many instances of rare variant spellings such as Pomary, Pomrey, Pomry, all of which no longer occur by the last century as the spelling of the surname standardised around the presently-existing group of four surnames.
Similar sounding names that are not part of the study include Pomfrey, Pomphrey & variants, Pumyea, Pomer and Pomero.
Meaning of the Name
The accepted meaning is that it traces back to the village of La Pommeraie in Bayeux, Normandy. Earthworks of the castle of Ralph de la Pomeray still remain near Falaise called the Chateau Ganne. For more details read the section on the ancient family.
There is a coat of arms and a long history attached to the name. At some point in the future I will add details to the website.
Surname Distribution & Mutation
The most common spelling in early documents of the four surnames that now survive in the UK was Pomery. Its proportion in the total POM population has be falling for many years and is now considerably less than that of Pomeroy or Pomroy.
Surname spellings were inconsistent for many centuries before stabilising in the later nineteenth century when literacy rates rose significantly. In the C16th it was common to spell a name in several different ways in the same document. Spellings were often inconsistent in the period up to the nineteenth century as people did not sign their own name; the spelling depended on the scribe that penned it. In the nineteenth century as people started to migrate more within the country and to emigrate, switches in surnames sometimes occurred as a family moved, e.g. from the West Country to the North East. There are cases where one individual in a large family changed their name whilst the rest kept the original spelling, and cases where entire families switched spelling together.
