Matilda Pomfrey m. William Lea - Eastleach Martin - Dec. 20, 1830

According to census returns, Matilda [POMFREY] LEA was born in Fyfield, Gloucestershire ... and although some returns list her place of birth as Eastleach Martin ... I believe that the two places are pretty close to one another.

I found an IGI reference to a Matilda PUMPHRYS was baptised on November 10th, 1810 .... which is certainly within the right time-frame for my Matilda. Her parents are shown as being Edward & Ann PUMPHRYS. This is taken from a Parish Record.

The marriage to William LEA is also taken from Parish Records, transcribed to a CD put out by the Gloucestershire Family History Society. It has the surname spelled as POMFREY ... no "s" ... an "o" instead of the "u".

Now, I'm aware that surname spelling errors are a matter of course in such things ... and given their station in life, [generally Ag. Lab. on census returns] I'm quite sure that the entire family, on both sides, was illiterate or nearly so.

I can't find any reference, however, to any siblings for Matilda ... at least not with Edward & Ann as parents.

I'm looking for any information on Gloucestershire POMFREY families ... regardless of spelling.

Thanks

Mary E. Lea-Bannister
