Starting Sept. 5, 2014, Genealogy.com will be making a big change. GenForum
message boards, Family Tree Maker homepages, and the most popular articles
will be preserved in a read-only format, while several other features will
no longer be available, including member subscriptions and the Shop.
I will direct this post to the list, though it is sent in reply to postings by Charles Polak and Glen King, and in response to Glen King's query about David POLLACK. My paternal Great-Grandfather was David POLLACK. I have this on good authority--the death certificate of his son, my Grandfather Jacob 'Jack' POLLACK. Hebrew names of both are inscribed in the gravesite memorial (Y''acov ben R" D'vd). Jack's mother's maiden name appears to be 'DRUSHKA' though it is not totally legible; perhaps this could be your Flora. (Is her maiden name known?)
My Grandfather Jack POLLACK was Jewish and a Cohanim. Speculation is these Pollacks descended from the line of Rabbi Jacob Joseph Pollack, sent to Poland as the Halachic autority in the mid-1400's. The family likely originated in Austria-Hungary (and/or Czechoslovakia today). According to various experts, the POLLACK name may have evolved as a part of the Jewish diaspora, as a reference to "our" ancestors migration elsewhere from Poland (Polish surname expert William Hoffman), and may be a derivative of the Slavic Polak, Poliak, Polyak, and/or Polachek. To my best knowledge, we have been known as "Pollack" at least since the mid-nineteenth century, the lifetime of David POLLACK.
David's son and my Grandfather Jack was born in New York, in 1898,and lived there for the duration of his lifetime. He died in 1957 and is interred in the Westside Hebrew Benevolent Association's plot at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. His only child, a son Daniel (my father) is still living.
Jack POLLACK had several brothers and sisters, who presumably had children and grandchildren. I would love to hear from any of them. Jack's siblings were Arthur "Artie" POLLACK (lastwife Hilda); Joseph POLLACK; Morris (Moe) POLLACK ; Simon POLLACK; Fanny POLLACK and Anna POLLACK. If any of these names are familiar to Glen or other "Pollack" listers, please let me know.
