Betty,
I am wondering where you got the surname Locke for Nancy (Knox) Owens. That is not a name that has surfaced in any of the many records I have seen/reviewed.Her maiden name appears to have been Knox, although I cannot prove that with absolute certainty. She first m. William Owens, who died March 1698/98 (double dating), then she married William Polk, and had the children shown in William Polk's will of 1739/40 (double dating).
Re the wife of Charles Polke, the Indian Trader. Here is another good example of where the Polk genealogies went astray. Her name was Christian Cartlidge.Christian (Cartlidge) Polk married Ralph Matson after Charles Polke died.Later writers misinterpreted the evidence and thought her maiden name Christian Matson. The marriage of this couple occurred in Philadelphia, First Presbyterian Church, on 4 Aug 1734, and is documented in the Pennsylvani Archives
Second Series, 1890, Vol. 12,pg. 57.Charles Polke's surname is shown as Pulke. It appears that Christian remarried fairly quickly after Charles Polke's death to Ralph Matson, although I have not found a marraige record for the couple.Christian Cartlidge was the daughter of Edmund Cartlidge and Ann (Richardson) Lane, Edmund Cartlidge also being an Indian trader in the same area where Charles Polke did his business.
There is no land record for William Polk/Margaret Taylor in NC.I can say this after years of looking. The only actual record I have ever found that William Polk was in NC. was a Jan 1757 record as part of (or so it appears to me) the will of Thomas Spratt (of the Spratt family that Thomas Polk, son of William Polk/Margaret Taylor married into)viz, Anson Co., NC., accounts in the NC Archives, C. R. 005.801.1.From page 306 of the accounts is given an undated account (it follows account number 305 which is dated 17 Jan 1757) which states:"Account of Thomas Spratt, decd, to Thomas Polk, Admr. (n. d.). Pd.:John Clerk, William Barnett, Infines (?) Neel, & Thomas Polk, legatees.Contra Cr.:George Crawford, Andrew Berry, John price, William Polk, Sen., William Polk Junr., George Derumple (Dalrymple), Thomas Polk." This record ties Thomas Polk, William Polk, Sr. and William Polk, Jr. (son/father/son) together when viewed with other records and secondary sources.
Betty, there is a file at my website on William Polk who m. Nancy (Knox) Owens. His info is part of the file entitled "Genealogy Report:Descendants of Robert (Bruce??) Polk (or Pollok or Polke."This is one of the files there that I left sources in, so you can see those sources.Later, Bill Polk, Kansas City, MO.
