Jonathan Polk and Nancy Hunt SC and Ms

This is as close to the line that I can come to by looking at archives. But I am researching Mary Ann Polk born appx 1848 to Jonathon Hamilton Polk and Lovey(Liviania Stuckey) in MS, Lawrence Co.She is listed by MANY as marrying Augustus M Branton in Lawrence Co. MS in 1876.And her father is listed by MANY as being Jonathon Hampton POLK.
I am trying to sort this out as there are things that are bothering me about this line.First Mary Ann was born in 1848,she was in census with Jonathon And Lovey Polk in 1850, and Hamilton Polk and Lovey in 1860, the children all match through the years of census.
She was NOT in their census for 1870 ---cannot find her with Augustus Branton (and I think there are two Augustus --one Augustus M born in 1857-58 one born in 1848 that really married Mary Ann Polk of the above family.
They are in the Census for 1880 with Simon age 9 born in 1871!!And three more children. She is listed as born 1848 and he is born 1848 or close to it.
So who is the Mary Ann that married Augustus M Branton in 1876 in Lawrence Co. MS???
I have a letter that stated Augustus Branton left his family and was never seen again after heading to Natchez on a mule. And Mary Branton was listed in each and every census with the proper children on up to age 81 in 1930and she is living with her child. She was living with Harrison in 1910, Martha in 1920 and Leola in 1930.So I do feel comfortable that this is the same Mary Ann Polk.
So two questions:Why is Jonathon reflected as Jonathon Hampton at times when he was actually in census as Hamilton in 1860 and 1880?
And does anyone have any idea of Who the Augustus (without the M)is??I have information that he was actually Simon's brother not son,and since the widow Elizabeth was in the area living close to Simon in 1850,this could be possible. The son of Simon named Ausutus is the correct age to be Augustus M Branton, most certainly being age 2 in 1860 census.
Any help to clarify this would be greatly appreciated. Both Polk and Branton sides.I am doing this for my nephews so do not have a lot of family legend or fact to work with. Will be happy to share and compare what I have.
