Johnnie : Bishop and Gen.Lonidas Polk graduated from West Point in 1827, a year before his life-lonmg friend, Jefferson David. He resigned almost at once after graduation and entered the Episcopal ministry. At the time the Civil War erupted, he was "Missionary Bishop for the Southwest". I have heard him called "Episcopal Bishop of Louisians" also. David appointed him a Major General.Later he was made Lt. General and was a corps commander under Bragg and J.E. Johnston.Nor considered a very able general, he kept his position because of his frienship with Davis, powerful political support and his great influence over his soldiers. -- Ken Haas
