Moundsville -- Robert "Bob" Caylor Polen, age 70, formerly of Charleston, WV, and Moundsville, WV, died on November 4, 2005, at The Heritage, Bridgeport, WV from complications of lymphoma.

A native West Virginian, he was born on July 13, 1935, in Moundsville to the late Lloyd and Iva (Mamie) Caylor Polen.

He is survived by his fiancee, Emma Lee Hite of Bridgeport, children, Mark (Debbie) Polen of Cross Lanes, WV, and John Polen and Cynthia "Cindy" Polen, both of Moundsville, a granddaughter, Mackenzie Polen of Cross Lanes; two step-grandsons, Nicholas Young, M.D., of Charleston, and Patrick Young of Cross Lanes; a sister, Kathleen "Kate" McNinch of Moundsville, a sister-in-law, Iris Polen of Moundsville; three nieces, Carol Ann (Richard) Williams, of Columbus, Ohio, Jane McNinch of Moundsville, and Janet McNinch of Parker, Colorado, two nephews, Dan (Margie) Polen of New Port Richey, Florida, Terry (Lisa) Polen of Hurrican, WV, and several great-nieces and nephews and a great-great-nephew.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carrell Polen, and a brother-in-law, William "Bill" McNinch.

Mr. Polen graduated from Moundsville High School in 1953 and attended West Virginia University. He was employed by PPG at Natrium for 27 years as a research chemist. He also spent 33 years working with the West Virginia Legislature in various capacities.

He was elected 8 time to serve the people of Marshall County in the State Legislature as a member of the WV House of Delegates. He was executive director of the Railroad Association, State Government Affairs representation for the Railroad Corporations in West Virginia and retired from the State of West Virginia as assistant legislative liaison for the Governor's Office.

He was honored with the "Distinguished West Virginian" award by Governor Cecil H. Underwood in 2000 for his "Outstanding Achievements and Meritorious Service," the highest award bestowed upon a state citizen.

Mr. Polen was a member of the Masonic Marshall Union Lodge No. 8, A.F. & A.M., and the WV Chamber of Commerce.

Family will receive friends on Monday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Grisel Funeral Home & Crematory, 400 Jefferson Avenue, Moundsville, where funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m., with Rev. Tim Wilt officiating. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Moundsville.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Robert C. Polen may be made to the WVU Foundation 4-H, P.O. Box 1650, Morgantown, WV 26507, or Fund A., John Marshall Scholarship-Community Foundation of the Ohio Valley, c/o John Marshall High School, 1300 Wheeling Avenue, Glen Dale, WV 26038. The fund is administrated by WesBanco and provides scholarships for seniors at John Marshall to further their education beyond high school.

Note: Posted here because of the rarity of the name Polen in West Virginia. The Poling/Poland family is known to have lived along the Shenandoah in the 1770-1780 time period, then in Allegany, MD and subsequently in various parts of northern WV and the name in various spellings of Polin/Polen/Polan have been seen in Virginia records (in particular in Highland Co., VA). No additional specifics of this man or his parents is known to this contributor at this time.
