In Reply to: Thomas Poland, 1590, England by Thomas Poland, Sr. of 654

The progenitor of our branch of the Poling family was Thomas Poland who landed from the ship Scorpion at Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1642. He came from Gloucester County, England. He left his wife and at least three sons and a daughter in England to be brought over after he had established himself. His sons were James, John, Joseph and possibly, William. The descendants of John will be presented in this book.

The Polings who survived the Norman conquest became vassels to the Norman, Roger de Montgomeri, to whom William the Conqueror, among many other gifts, gave the Hundred of Poling, the Hundred of Angerming, and five other Hundreds to the Rape of Arundel. Polings are listed as Knights under the Earl of Arundel at the Battles of Crecy, and Agincourt, of the Hundred Years War.
