Can't help you specifically but your posting raised a comment and questions.
Indeed, Danzig and Gdansk are the same place. This city has switched between Polish and German for centuries. Napoleon also had a say in the matter. Enter Gdansk in Wikipedia and you can see the history.
My questions.1. Are we assuming ethnic German for Karl-Gustav Herman? or could he have been Danish, Swedish, or even Norwegian in ethnicity?
Do you know why he was deported all the way to the Ukraine? This would be in the opposite direction of home, so either somebody wanted him far away from friends, or was he in the army? or was he shipped there for military reasons? What is the history of that town in 1787? That may help you out more.
