Margaret,
Here the help try from Poland, as your neighbour MUST HAVE the correct name of the family birth and origin, as all civil/genealogical records in Europe are basing on the exact place/parish. Let's start with the first help:
If his family origin is really "Podgorz" (strict Polish name means "at the hill") then Polish sources - http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podg%C3%B3rzhttp://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podg%C3%B3rz - are giving 3 villages in Poland named as "Podgorz" and clicking on "Podgorz" you have one as the part of the old Prussian and Polish town Torun - Thorn, here is hyperlink for your neighbour's Family History Book:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toru%C5%84http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toru%C5%84
You can tell all family genealogical search can be followed with that town archival and parish books.
The family names Kung and Grolla look for me as German with Evangelical - Lutheran religion and records. Szczepanski is Polish, but as in many Germans and Poles families we can meet both.
Torun - Thorn with LDS micforilms you can find here:

If not this "Podgorz", it might be one of the first two from given page, or "Podgorzyn" SW Poland.
Hope this helps a bit, good luck!
