That is great additional clarification to have, Norbert.It affirms that Wolyn = Volhynia does not apply here as I was beginning to suspect.
The Mazurian region is particularly known for the intermingling and intermarriage of Germans and Poles.The historical German Lutheran churches there in particular offered services in the Polish language.I believe that there were even Polish nobility in the area in the early 1600s that attempted (but failed) to establish Lutheranism as the official religion of Poland.
Hopefully this clarification will help give proper direction for Chuck's search as I was previously leading him astray.
And Chuck - you should still try to affirm if the family was Catholic or Lutheran or Baptist.There was a Mazurian Lutheran community in Manitoba that worshiped in the Polish language as recently as the 1950s and I believe there were also Mazurian Lutherans and/or Baptists in Detroit.
