Hi Chuck and Jerry,
I reviewed the Border Crossing from Canada documents for John and Boleslawa/Bernice Schwarzbach and here is what I interpret:
John’s nearest relative in his native land was his wife’s father Alexander “Mazalski” in Maszurian Wolna Russia. His race was listed as German. His destination was 769 Rivard Street in Detroit, MI where he was going to join his brother-in-law “Kaszymyr” Andrzejewski. His last residence was 266 Pritchard Ave., in Winnipeg MB Canada. According to the border crossing record, John immigrated through Halifax in 1912. The name of the ship was unknown.
Boleslawa and two of her children were separated on the ship manifest. The two (2) daughters born in Canada were listed separately.
Boleslawa, Edward and Jannia were listed together.Their destination was 182 Leland Street in Detroit where they were going to join their husband and father Johan.Their last residence was 266 Pritchard Ave. in Winnipeg, MB Canada. Their nearest relative in their native land was Boleslawa’s father Alexander Madziar in “Miezczice” ???? Russia.Boleslawa listed her race as Polish and her place of birth as Warsaw. The children’s race was listed as German and their place of birth was “Miezczice”.
According to the border crossing record, Boleslawa and the her two oldest children immigrated through Quebec on April 6, 1913. The name of the ship was unknown.
The record for the two (2) youngest daughters, Stefania and Sophie, indicate that they were both born in Canada and that their race was German.Their last residence and destination was the same as their mother’s.
Here is the name of a possible church where Stefania and Sophie were baptized (near 266 Pritchard Ave.).

There are 1920 and 1930 U.S. Census records for the John and Bernice Schwarzbach family.
In 1920, they are indexed on Ancestry.com as John “Szwasba” living at 937 24th Street in Detroit Ward 12, Wayne County, MI 48216.
In 1930, they are indexed on Ancestry.com as John “Swartzbeck” living at 416 Riverbank Ave. Wyandotte, Wayne County, MI 48192.
In 1920, they are living with Kasimir and Sophie Andrzejewski and John’s brother Edward.
In 1930, Wanda and Helen are added to the household and Jannia/Jennie has left.John’s brother Edward is still living with the family.
There is an annotation on the Border Crossing document that John
Schwarzbach/Swartzback filed for his citizenship papers in the Detroit U.S. district Court. The annotation is “C/A 8-15100706/28/1938” ( 8= Detroit District Court, certificate of arrival #151007, date filed June 18, 1938).
A copy of John’s U.S. Naturalization documents would contain information about his ancestral home and immigration process.
I will email you copies of the documents discussed above.
Best regards,
Norbert
