Gregory,
I see your problem and help try from our forum friend Gilberto from Paraiba - Gil is right, there were and are plenty places named Aleksandrowa - Aleksandrowo - Aleksandrow - etc. in old Poland including lands that are located now in Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Russia, thus, really it's very hard to make any search. You must give us a little more giving us any chance to locate this place. But you deserve to know this family name Birnbaum is still living in 2011 Poland, here is the surname map based on Polish census 2002:
http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/birnbaum.htmlhttp://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/birnbaum.html = 151 Poles surnamed Birnbaum, living in few parts of Poland, but mainly in the capital Warsaw/area.

Now, the question would be connected to vital records that must be researched: what was the religion of your ancestors from Poland? Hebrew? Catholic? But in this case you will have the next problem, as many Jews married to Poles and became Catholics, all this land for centuries was a melting pot of many nations and religions, for us Poles all Jews were our good neighbours, with different culture, but with the same homeland and nationality.

Hope this helps a bit,
Good luck,
