Hi Tonia,
There are five (5) locations in Poland with the name Swiecie. It appears that the location you are researching is the town of Swiecie in the gmina (township) and powiat (county) of Swiecie in the province of Kujawsko-Pomorskie. This town has a population of approximately 25,500.
To view the town of Swiecie on a map, go to the following web site:
http://mapa.szukacz.pl/
The map is in Polish. In the white box below Miejscowosc, type in SWIECIE (capitalized for emphasis only). Then click on POKAZ. Next zoom-in using ZBLIZ and zoom-out using ODDAL.
The other four (4) Swiecie locations are all small villages.
The Later Day Saints (Mormons) Family History Library (FHL) has microfilmed records of the baptisms, marriages and deaths (1672 to 1900) for Swiecie (aka known as Schwetz at the time of your great grandfather’s immigration in 1889). Here is a hyperlink to that record.
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/printing/titledetailsprint.asp?titleno=287772
You can rent and view this microfilm at any Family History Library or else ask your local public library to arrange an interlibrary loan of the film.
There are Hamburg and New York Passenger records for your great grandfather. He sailed from Hamburg Germany on May 12, 1889 on board the S.S. Hammonia. He was about 16 years old and single at the time. He arrived in New York on May 24, 1889. He listed Schwetz West Prussia as his last residence.
He eventually settled in New Britain, Hartford County CT where he met and married Frances and raised his family. He died a widower on January 20, 1957 in Seymour, New Haven County, CT.
I am not related.
Best regards,
Norbert
