info on Polish surname Bachman

My mother's surname was Bachman, she was born in Poland and her roots are Polish (ie no known German ancestors). does anyone have info on the geneology of this name. Her family used to think its origins are Austrian from many centuries back, but it was also suggested to be Jewish.
